Mod Logs Kicks Off

Whew!  I am back from the blogging abyss.  Sorry to have fallen off there, but I am happy to be back giving you news.  I have been slowly messing with Mod Logs lately and am thrilled with the blocks thus far.  There are two block types.  This is the first type, of which I need 31.  I have all centers pieced and the "framing" edges cut and ready to go for tonight.  Can't wait to get started!

Once these are tidy and ironed, I'll move onto block two. It is kind of the reverse of this one, so I think I will be OK.  As usual on a Tuesday I'm linking up with Quilt Story's Fabric Tuesday.  Come over and see what folks are creating!

Yum.

Are you looking for the Goodie Swap Sign Up post?  Click here
Today is your last chance to sign up!

What the the lovely postman bring to my house today?  Little packages of happiness, of course.

The most fantastic thing to arrive is this little envelope of goodness from Sarah of Fairy Face Designs.  Sarah saw my WIP post earlier this week and noticed I was stuck short of scrappy fabric for my Community Quilt.  I needed 7 little two inch squares of any fabric that had not already been used in the quilt.  Seven. Stupid. Squares....and then my quilt top can be finished.  Lovely Sarah volunteered to toss a few 2 inch squares in the post and they arrived today.  Thank you, Sarah!!! Way to live up to the spirit of the Community quilt, my friend.

If you haven't already been over to Fairy Face Designs, jump over ASAP.  Sarah is hosting the great Across the Sea QAL right now that is just starting, so there is still time to join in the fun!

To compound the happiness, Sarah included a little pile of happy scraps that I can't wait to incorporate into this next project....

I fell in love with this scrappy star quilt at the Ready Thready Sew exhibit a few days ago, so I need to find a few small stacks of vibrantly colored fabric.  I could not resist this little short stack of Erin McMorris Summersaults from Celtic Fusion Fabric.

Happiness.  It comes in small little packages.

What? It's Wednesday?

If you are looking for the Goodie Swap Sign Up post, click here.  Join in the fun!

I can not believe how quickly this week has gone by.  I have very little to show for it.  Here is the mini-news, but its the best I can do.

There are now 43 lovely ladies signed up for the great Goodie Swap, which is beyond my hopes and expectations.  We are all really excited to get going, but sign ups will continue to Friday.  To get an idea of what my current mug rug crushes are, just have a peek at the mosaic I posted yesterday.  I wonder what my partners will make for me...or what I will make for them?

Lattice Illusions is FINISHED!  No need to say more except that I am completely thrilled with the finished product. It is a present, so I hope the recipient likes it too.

I conquered 3 of 4 Community Quilt corners.  They were so much harder than I thought they would be.  Had to adjusting my "calibrated" quarter inch seam, which clearly wasn't a quarter inch just to have seams match up.  Come to find out that indeed the machine is set up just fine and my needle is bent!  (Lesson learned - change your needle regularly.)  Painful, painful last little step.  Still, I have 3 finished and have stitched two and the connecting border onto one side of the top.

I ran out of little scrap 2 inch squares to finish the outer border of the corner 4, but more fabric on its way. Yippee for Celtic Fusion Fabrics small packs!

With Lattice Illusions finished, I can start a new project!  Here I will use a pattern called Mod Logs by Della Gardner.  Ages ago I bought two jelly rolls of Moda Fresh Flowers for this project, along with a Kona White background fabric.  I am really happy to finally jump into something new.

As usual on a Wednesday, I am linking up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday.

Mug Rug Mosaic

If you are looking for the Goodie Swap Sign Up post, click here. Only 3 days left to jump in the fun!

With a bit of encouragement from Hadley, I made an inspirational mosaic for our Goodie Swap.  Using Mosaic Maker for the first time was great fun!  It's really interesting to have a good search for those images that strike you and then look for the common theme.  Apparently I like bold, geometric patterns, heavy quilting and basic primary colors.  Who knew?

If you haven't tried making a mosaic yourself, give it a shot!  You may be surprised with what you generate :)

Lattice Illusions: Finished

If you are looking for the Goodie Swap Sign Up post, click here. Only 3 days left to jump in the fun!

Whew! Lattice Illusions is finally finished and I am so pleased!  Here it is all freshly washed, fluffy dried and out on the line.

This quilt began as a class at the Quilter's Guild of Ireland annual retreat in February.  I wanted to work on my precision quilting and this was a great opportunity with all of the little angles and points to match.  The pattern was for a small lap quilt, but really I tend to make larger quilts than 48" square quilts.  With 3-4 pattern re-writes there were several trips to the local quilt shop to buy more fabric as the pattern evolved.  Anyway, I finished it off with stitch in the ditch quilting (to not distract from the points I worked so hard to piece) and a scrappy binding that was hand stitched.

I have a small bit of fabric (300g or 10.5 oz) remaining and I would love to find a good home for it.  It's in great shape and would work well both in scrappy or art quilts as they are nice semi-solid neutrals.  I just need to stop looking at them.  Would anyone like a little bag of goodies?  Just leave a comment below and I will get back to you by Wednesday.

Quilt Stats:Name: Lattice Illusions
Made For: Shhh....it's a gift....
Fabric: Makower UK - Spraytime Line

Batting: Warm & Natural
Size: 68" x 68" (72"x72" before washing)
Quilting: Stitch In The Ditch

Pattern: Modified version of Christine Porter's Lattice Illusion

As usual on Monday, I am linking up with Canoe Ridge Creation's Sew Modern Monday and Quiltstory's Fabric Tuesday.

Caroline's All Heart Appeal for Cancer Research UK

If you are looking for the Goodie Swap Sign Up post, click here.

My friend Caroline, from The Contented Quilter, is creating a quilt or two to raise money for Cancer Research UK.  I wanted to contribute, so I made two heart blocks for her creations.  This is my first time trying applique, so be kind.  I have a lot to learn, but it was an OK start.

I wanted to embellish a bit, as you don't often get that chance.  So, I did a bit of embroidery.  In this heart, I filled in the center of each flower with a little yellow french knot and stitched around the edge with a running stitch.  It is a little hard to see, but it is there.  Honest.

Here I just used little french knots in white floss along the edge of the heart.  I liked this one best, I think.

It only takes 10-15 minutes for a block and they give you the freedom to create anything you'd like.  It's a great way to spend half an hour, for a great cause.  I hope you join in too! Here, in Caroline's words, are the details:

I'm aiming to raise money for Cancer Research UK by selling raffle tickets for a quilt I will make with donated hearts. At the moment I am still at the 'heart' gathering stage - I need as many blocks as possible of 8" squares of red or pink fabric with a heart/hearts sewn into the centre. The hearts can be any size, any shape (just heart-like), embroidered, appliqued or pieced I really don't mind . I'm hoping to make more than one quilt to raffle off as a prize. There is no time limit but I would like to have made a quilt by September. More info on my blog thecontentedquilter.blogspot.com.

yours gratefully
Caroline xxx

WIP Update: running like crazy....but in a good way

Things are busy here at Fluffy Sheep Quilting, but that is how we like it.  Right?  Here's the WIP news:

Sign ups for a Goodie Swap, hosted here at Fluffy Sheep Quilting, opened as of yesterday. We will each make a mug rug and a goodie of our choice (such as a pin cushion or a needle book....or any item of our choice) for two swap partners and get two in return. I would love to have all of you participate, so go to this post and leave a comment if you are interested in playing along.  Awww, come on.  You know you want too :)

Lattice Illusions is indeed moving along. It is layered and the quilting finished. I did a simple stitch in the ditch to not take away from the lines/corners in the piecing. This is my first attempt at stich in the ditch and I am not entirely thrilled with it, but I made peace with that.  The binding is 75% hand stitched on, so hopefully you will see a finished quilt posted later this week.

I am still playing catch up for the Birdie Stitches BOM from Little Miss Shabby.  I recently finished the snorkeling August block, but still need to design and stitch a June block.  Hopefully that will be done before the September block is released.  Eeeekkk!  The pressure!!!

Our Community Quilt is moving again. The Kona Snow I needed has arrived (hooray Simply Solids!) so I could finish the back. I still have to piece the 4 corners and then attach the two remaining strips of binding to finish the top. with any luck, this will be layered over the weekend. I can not wait to start quilting this beauty.  Being the optomist I am, I already have the binding ready to go. I better finish it now, huh? :)

I am sorry for such a wonky picture. I promise it does look good. I had it on the clothes line and the sun was setting (hurry!  hurry!), but it is so big it would slip off of the line when I went to take the photo.  You only see about 2/3 of it here.  And, after watching my struggle, I had a little "help", which was no help at all.

The Sew Bee Blissful quilting bee (hosted by Sew Happy Geek) has officially kicked off.  I finished my first two blocks and shipped them off to our Queen Bee, Jenna.  I hope she likes them!

As usual on a Wednesday, I am linking up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday, and Someday Crafts Whatever Goes Wednesday.

Goodie Swap Sign Ups

The weather has started to change here in Galway. It is too sad to think of the summer (that I never really had) ending and fall beginning.  I was thinking a little swap in August and September may be just the thing to brighten this transition.  Need a little pick-me-up?  Sign up!
A rockin' mug rug by Patchwork Delights

This is a goodie swap, so everyone will have a chance to be creative.  Each participant will make one mug rug (about 9x7 inches) and one goodie of their choice for their partners.  By goodie, I mean any item you would like to make on the scale of a pouch, pin cushion, needle book or brooch.  The choice is yours.  Try something new or choose your go-to project.

A little needle book...

This will be a direct swap such that everyone signing up will be assigned two partners to which you will directly mail your creations.  You, in turn, will get goodie packages from two other participants.  You will not know who is creating for you, so it will be a surprise package that arrives. To forewarn you: this will be an international swap, so you may have to ship your goodies over seas.

The timeline is listed below.  Please, please, please try your best to adhere so you do not let down your partners:

16 to 26  August - sign ups
31 August - assigning swap partners
Brooch by Mary Emmens
1 to 21 September - stitching and more stitching
22 September - post your goodies to your partners

If they are helpful, are some of my favorite mug rug tutorials, but there are many, many more out there if you look:

If you are interested in participating, leave a comment below with your email address.  Once sign ups close, I will get in touch with you to get your mailing address, your three favorite colors and your fabric preferences (floral, geometric, solids, etc) to act as a guide (not as instructions) for your swap partners.  I will then assign you the two partners for whom you will create.

This will be fun! A great way to use up that stash; give you the chance to expand your horizons; and hopefully will brighten both your day and your partner's mail box.  What are you waiting for?  Sign up today!

PS: As usual on a Tuesday, I'm linking up with Quilt Story's Fabric Tuesday.

Ready Thready Sew Exhibit

The Tuam quilting circle, Ready Thready Sew, has a quilt exhibit in the Tuam Town Hall as part of the Tuam Arts Festival (12-20 August).  I went up for a bit of inspiration.

I wish I did a better job recording the name of each individual quilter.  To be clear, this is not my work.  All of the credit goes to the Ready Thready Sew group.

Sadly, I could not get a photo "head on" with any quilt.  Their exhibit room was very small and packed to the gills with lovely quilts.  You will notice they often overlap one another it was so tight.  Ready Thready Sew did a nice job of displaying their work given the space restriction, but many times over I was wondering why today was the day I had to bring my big purse. I was knocking over anything not nailed to a wall.  Anyway, I did the best I could taking photos.

Everyone in the group contributed to this vibrant, scrappy beauty.  This was my favorites in the exhibit as it was so beautiful and bright. It will be auctioned off for charity at the end of the week.

This quilt used all Asian inspired prints and they were beautiful together. Although they were all cotton, they gave a silky, elegant look when placed together.

A classic sampler in bold, stark colors.  It really makes the blocks jump out at you, doesn't it?

And this beauty with the colors of a mermaid's tail.  They were so beautiful together, but the lighting did not do it justice.  This was a quilt in tribute to the quilter's Mom.  The winding path is the path of life, never doubling back on itself.  Here the same Drunkard's Path block is used time and time again making the trail that starts in one corner and ends in the opposing corner.  Really a nice piece of work.

As usual on a Monday I am linking up with Sew Happy Geek's Manic Monday and Canoe Ridge Creation's Sew Modern Monday.

Deflated

Allow me 30 seconds of complaints, will you?  This weekend has not been the best quilting weekend for me and I keep looking for a way to turn it around.  Failing each time.  It made me think of Sarah's post earlier in the week.

I was quilting Lattice Illusions yesterday.  Somehow I made a mistake when layering the quilt, so when I tried to put the last 5 inches of quilting into the top (to FINALLY finish this puppy off), I realize the top had bubbled and I have more quilt top fabric than will lay flat in this small area.  Stinker.  Rip it out and start again.....

I lost my seam ripper at a critical time such as this.  Where could it go?  I searched high and low and finally found it stuck in my ponytail holder at the back of my head.  What is wrong with me?  So, I rip out my Lattice Illusions quilting and replaced the seam ripper in my ponytail (as that is apparently where I keep it now).  Did you know that a seam ripper will cut through hair?  Oh indeed it does!  I forgot to put the cap back on the ripper and I successfully cut a chunk out of my hair.  Awesome.

So, I gave up on quilting yesterday thinking that I would head out to a lovely craft show today in Gort.  I was up this morning, excited about seeing a ton of handmade goods, chores done and ready to go.  Wait!  With my luck this weekend, I should call to be sure the show is on....and no.  No.  They canceled, but never updated their website.  Stinker.  Another disappointment.

I am off to Tuam (pronounced Tomb for the non-Irish....sounds like a place you would love to go, doesn't it?) now for a quilt show.  Maybe that will re-instate my quilty mojo.  Fingers crossed I come back jazzed and ready to quilt!  Tomorrow's post will be happier.  I promise.

Sew Bee Blissful: August Block

I am participating in the Sew Bee Blissful quilting bee hosted by Jenna of Sew Happy Geek.  A little while ago, Jenna sent a package to each of us with beautiful fabric and a tutorial to make a double pinwheel block.  After a lot of mental preparation, as I can't mess this up for Miss Jenna, here is what I came up with...

I swear the points in the center do match.   It is just that the two shades of purple are so similar in some areas you can not see the line.  And my second block:

These were to be 12.5 inch square blocks, but for the life of me I could only make 12.25 inch blocks.  Why?  Why!?!?  Why, when it matters, can I not make a 12.5 inch block?  I do not know.  I measured, calculated, measured, re-calculated, etc and finally just emailed Jenna.  She was super kind and flexible and is graciously willing to take my 12.25 inch blocks for her quilt.  I really hope she is happy when she sees them in person!

We were also asked to create a block (the design being our choice) for the back of her quilt.  I thought a modern-ish log cabin would be fun. I have been fascinated by a modern log cabin posted by Jennifer of Ellison Lane Quilts, so I kind of re-created this for Jenna's back block.  This is 6.5 inches square.

I really like the idea of having a 6 inch block from the scraps of each monthly block for the back of my quilt.  I am off to make one for myself right now!

Birdie Stitches: August

And here it is....the eagerly anticipated (well, by me anyway) August Birdie Stitches block.  The normal down-loadable August template just did not speak to me, so I wanted to take the opportunity to an August scene that often reflects my own holiday and insert my personality into this project.   I am so pleased!

I am nearly on schedule with this stitch along, but still have June to sketch and stitch.  It's going to be a camping birdie :)

100th Fluffy Sheep Quilting Post

Giveaway is now closed.  Winners will be announced shortly.

Woo hoo!  Here we are 100 posts into Fluffy Sheep Quilting.  I really can not believe how quickly time has gone by.  I can not believe I have this much to say!

I never planned on becoming a blogger.  I was home one night, bored, not able to sleep.  At 2 AM, while blog surfing, suddenly my own blog seemed like a good idea.  I quickly hooked!  Maintaining Fluffy Sheep Quilting is motivation for me to create and your encouragement keeps me laughing and moving forward.

My first post was on the 4th of March entitled "Why not me too?", which was quickly followed by my first comment ever on post 2 by Sandy (of Quilting for the Rest of Us).  Oh my goodness!  Other people are actually reading this! What a rush.

At 100 posts later with about 11,430+ page views and 112 followers, this adventure has a life of its own.  The coolest thing, I think, is the international nature of the readers.  There are folks regularly reading FSQ from North America (both the US and Canada), Europe (Ireland, the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Sweden and Norway primarily), Australia, South America (Brazil), Asia (India, Israel, Hong Kong, Singapore) and Africa (South Africa).  With Antarctica, we would have all continents joining in.  Are there quilters in Antarctica?

Thank you all for reading, commenting, encouraging and teaching me.   This has been a fantastic experience for me; one that I hope continues to grow.

Will we celebrate this milestone in the traditional way?  GIVEAWAY!  I have 3 giveaway prizes that you can enter by leaving a comment.  Leave your name, your email (if you are a no-reply blogger) and the giveaway you would like to enter.  Please also share a link to a blog you highly recommend.  Not your own, but another that inspires you or makes you giggle.  It is nice for everyone to find a new source of inspiration. Followers get two entries (but need to recommend two blogs) as you are the regular commenters that always brighten my day!  This giveaway will close on Tuesday at 5PM GMT.  Good luck!

Giveaway 1:  A set of 4 fat quarters.
This are pretty, bright, happy fabrics that make my heart flutter.  I hope you like them too!

Giveaway 2: A set of 4 batik fat quarters.
Batiks are new for me and I am really enjoying them.  I would like to use them more in the next 6 months.

Giveaway 3: A set of 3 novels.
These mystery novels, by Clare O'Donohue, center around a group of quilting friends and their collaborative effort to solve local murders.  They are nice, light reading.

This post will be linked to Manic Monday at Sew Happy Geek and Sew Modern Monday at Canoe Ridge Creations as well as Fabric Tuesday at Quilt Story.  Use the buttons on the right of the blog to hop over there and see what's new!

Sketching Birdies

As you already know, I enjoying the Birdie Stitches block of the month stitch along.  The templates are cute and I enjoy having something to embroider when watching movies or traveling.

Now that I am more comfortable in my stitching, I want to add a bit more of my personality into this project. I have decided to draw my own templates for the June and August blocks to better reflect how I like to spend the summer.  This is a large jump for me as I am not an artist.  I like to color (yes, with crayons) what someone else has drawn, but that's the limit of my "talent".

One of my favorite things to do in August or September is to go scuba diving or snorkeling.  So, here is my attempt at a snorkeling birdie.  I love him :)  The photo looks a little fuzzy and I don't know why.  If you click on it the fuzz will disappear.

I can not wait to see how the camping June birdie turns out!

Sew Bee Blissful: Block 1

My first Sew Be Blissful block has arrived!  Wait.  Let me re-phrase. The goodies to make my first Sew Bee Blissful block has arrived.

This month we are making blocks for a our host, Jenna of Sew Happy Geek.  This is my first quilting bee, so I am overly excited to get started.  Jenna is looking for a block similar to the one below using the Lovely Little Handmade tutorial.  I will try my best, Miss Jenna!

Jenna sent several beautiful fabrics to work with.  I need to really spend some time looking at the tutorial and sorting through the fabrics to be sure I create contrast, thereby letting the pinwheel design shine through.  I will post a photo when it's done.

She sent along a fun little post card from Liverpool, the home of the Beatles.  How fun!  I'll have to think of something fun to return to her.

WIP Update: Stitching Like Mad

This has been a very busy sewing week for me.  I am excited about what I have accomplished.

Finished:
This week we completed our Japanese Fabric Swap.  We are very excited to receive our charm packs and a few folks are already posting finished projects using them!  For now, I am just happy to pet, look and imagine what I will create.  This week I will be adding a Japanese Fabric Swap tab to Fluffy Sheep Quilting. It's nearly ready for prime time!

Currently In Progress:
I finished the top for Lattice Illusions this week.  I am simply thrilled to have reached this milestone.  The back and binding are ready to go.  Tomorrow I will layer it and get to quilting.  I think I have a quilting plan that is mostly stitch in the ditch in the center three panels and a cross-hatch in the border "tiles".  We'll see how it goes, anyway.

I am still playing catch up for the Birdie Stitches BOM from Little Miss Shabby.  I have the January to May blocks finished, but not June.  I finished the July block earlier this week and have to jump in on August.  I want to put a little more of my own personality into this block calendar, so I'd like to re-design the June block to be a camping picture and the August block to be a snorkeling/diving scene.  I'll work on that this week.

My biggest source of pride this week is the near completion of our Community Quilt top.  I ran out of fabric and am waiting for more to arrive.  Once its here, I can finish the corner blocks, stitch on the final two borders (which are already pieced) and finish the back.  When layered I will (somehow) quilt this with straight lines so as to not detract from the piecing pattern.  The Kona Papaya binding arrived today.  I am really in love with the yellows in this quilt, so I wanted to highlight them in the binding.

I sent off my charms for the Rainbow Charm Swap 2 at Ellison Lane Quilts.  I am looking forward to seeing what lovely packet I get in return.

The Sew Bee Blissful quilting bee (hosted by Sew Happy Geek) has just started.  I am happy to be part of this, my first, quilting bee.  Come back tomorrow for a more detailed post!

As usual on a Wednesday, I am linking up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday, and Someday Crafts Whatever Goes Wednesday.
