I took a bit of time this past weekend to quilt my little pinwheel top. In the end, I decided to go with many different colors of thread for quilting, all in a diagonal across the quilt top. I like the overall effect, giving you something more to look at than just straight lines. I thought before I trimmed it, I would take a photo or two to show you guys.
It was so windy when I was out there taking the photo that it was nearly impossible to get the whole top AND have it in focus! So I just laid it all down to take a still photo. How did I not see my foot in there while I was framing the shot!?!? Goodness knows. Anyway, you can see the various yellow, pink, aqua and green threads used for quilting a bit better here.

All in all, I was quite pleased with myself. I had this little cutie all quilted and ready to trim. You see, I wanted a bit of hand work to do this weekend.

Total stinker pot. Stinker stinker stinker pot. There's a fold quilted into the back of the quilt. Its about 3 inches long and quite deep on the one side. I can get the tip of my finder in there! (Sorry about the awful orange photos...we're back inside trying to get warm again.)
Is there any possible way to unpick these few lines of quilting and smooth it out? Do you guys have any experience here? Or will I have to unpick a full half of the quilt to smooth it and re-quilt it? Any suggestions are totally welcome. Worst case is that I have to unpick half to re-quilt it. Still gives me something to do by hand I guess :(

Maybe I'm lazy (okay, no maybe about it) but I think I'd be slip stitching that bad boy closed and calling it done. 3 inches? Pfft. That's nothing!

That's what I was going to say too! Stitch it down with some matching thread and no one will ever know!
I'm with all the others- stitch it down and call it done! Or call it a design feature- slip a little treaure ( bottom or charm in there) ! A secret pocket!
I don't know - I'm with Lynz and the others but then it is a baby quilt so I would probably unpick as the latent not very often spotted perfectionist in me raised its ugly head!
Appliqué a patch over it and call it a pieced backing?!?
Oh no C! So sorry you've got a dreaded fold. The only way I know of is to unpick the half up to the fold and re-smooth the backing down and re-quilt. Alternatively, unpick the lines of stitching either side of the fold, snip some of the bulk out, then fold under one raw edge and top sew it down on top of the other raw edge, making it look like a join in the fabric! jxo
appliquée a pinwheel over it ...
I was thinking you could slipstitch it down, like Lynz said, or could you stitch some kind of a fancy label or applique over it? I like Leo's idea of a Pinwheel :)
I'm with Lynz! And then if it still bothers you, sew your label over the top! :). It's beauty! The quilt not the fold!

I would just stitch the fold closed rather than unpicking all of that fabulous quilting!.
I would not unsew that.
The way I see it is you have 2 choices.
1. You could carefully press the fold into a neat seam and stitch it down. No one will ever notice it if you are careful.
Or
2. You could appliqué a label over this area.
It's a great quilt!

Yep I'd defiantly not be unpicking it, I too am lazy! I'd put my label right over the top! It is a gorgeous quilt.
Yup, I'm with Lynz cos that baby would need the whole half unpicked to smooth that out. Close it up, no one will ever know, we wont tell ;-)
If I moan about the same, my hubby just laugh at me being a perfectionist. Just like everybody said stitch it up and forget. Don't worry nobody notice.
Label over top gets my vote too. Unpicking sucks and it looks too beautiful to be taking a seam ripper to it.
Give the quilt a name eg "Learning Curve"..slip stitch it...and move onto the next fabulous creation :)
I'm with everyone else - hide it as best you can and move on! It is only the back after all!
Ssssooooo glad I'm not alone! My first thought was "stitch it down-nobody will notice". My second thought was "Oh no! I must be a DREADFUL quilter to have such thoughts-I'll probably be struck off!" My third thought was "I'm going to have to read the comments, to see if I'm the only lazy person out there!" And I'm so glad I did! A little bit of reassurance! It's a beautiful quilt by the way! xx

as for the fold, if you can't live with it (I totally would!), how about slapping a quilt label over the top and hand stitching it down?
Well I am certain you know I wouldn't unpick it but if you must (which seems ridiculous) - can you remove a couple inches, slice the background, create a seam and renew? Did that make sense?
There's no way I'd unpick all that quilting - I'd either stitch it down or stitch a label over it, maybe make it a pinwheel label at an angle so it doesn't look like it's been plonked there to hide something?!
P.S. The quilt is gorgeous!
It's so perfect the way it is.. Just smile and know you created something so awesome!
Put the label over it! That's my solution to creases and folds in the backing. I only unpick them if they're right near the edge and easy to smooth out.
Where is the fold in the backing - is it anywhere you'd get away with appliqueing a random block or quilt label over it to conceal it?
I don't think I could unpick all that lovely quilting!
